The library's Tibetan Architectural Documentation Center is an architectural archive cataloguing photographs of buildings and architectural features of Tibet and the Himalayan region. Sadly, Tibetan architecture is in grave danger of extinction. The Chinese invasion of 1959 led to the systematic destruction of the flourishing Tibetan culture. Monuments and traditional buildings were the most affected. Of more than 6,000 monuments that existed in the pre-1959 period only a few remain. The Tibetan Architectural Documentation Center seeks to document this dying tradition and act as a databank for future constructions.
Since its inception, the TADC has acquired over 2,000 slides and photographs of ancient monuments in Tibet and the Trans-Himalayan areas. Since so many of the buildings documented in the archive no longer exist, the collection provides an invaluable glimpse into Tibet 's magnificent erstwhile architectural heritage. The Tibetan Architecture Club has been established in connection with the archive to encourage local Tibetan school students with an interest in architecture to develop an appreciation of Tibetan building traditions.
